What the Stockholm Pass covers

The 68 included attractions fall into four groups, and they are worth very different amounts. That distinction is worth making before you do the sums.

The three big names. The Vasa Museum holds the warship Vasa, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised almost intact from the harbour mud centuries later. Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, gathers farmsteads, workshops and churches from all over Sweden onto one hill and keeps a zoo with elk, lynx and bears. The Royal Palace in Gamla Stan is the royal family's residence and, with its state rooms, the third of the must-sees. The Royal Armoury (Livrustkammaren) in the palace cellars is a separate entry in the pass, not part of the palace ticket. With the All-Inclusive Pass you get the palace and the armoury. The Vasa Museum, The Royal Palace and Skansen are also the premium list of the smaller pass.

Museums, and plenty of them. Forty of the 68 entries are museums, and that breadth is Stockholm's real strength. The prominent ones: Fotografiska on the Södermalm waterfront, Nordiska Museet in its palatial building next to Skansen, the Nobel Prize Museum on Stortorget, Vrak with its salvaged wrecks, The Viking Museum, Tekniska for science and technology, Nationalmuseum at Blasieholmen and the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Then come the specialist museums you would never find on your own: SPRITMUSEUM on Swedish drinking culture, Dansmuseet, The Hallwyl Museum as a preserved town palace, Postmuseum, The Police Museum and K. A. Almgren Silk Weaving & Museum. Outside the city the pass opens Drottningholm Palace with the Drottningholm Court Theatre and the Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm, Gripsholm Castle, Skokloster Castle and the Millesgården Museum on Lidingö.

On the water. This is where the expensive items sit. The full-day trip to Birka, the Viking town on Lake Mälaren, takes a whole day, and so do the Grand Archipelago Tour to Artipelag and the Grand Archipelago Tour to Gustavsberg. Shorter, but not cheap either: the Stockholm Highlights Boat Tour, the City Hall Canal Boat Tour, the Royal Djurgården Boat Tour, the trips to Vaxholm and Fjäderholmarna, and the Boat tour to Drottningholm Palace. In winter the Winter Boat Tour with Guide takes their place. On top of those comes the Stockholm Hop-On Hop-Off Boat.

Out and about on land. The Stockholm Hop-On Hop-Off Bus serves the city's most important stops, and it should not be confused with public transport, because SL is not in the pass. For something more active there are kayak and SUP tours in the centre and at Pampas Marina, the Solve a Mystery self-guided tour through the old town, three adventure golf courses, The Butterfly House Haga Ocean and Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje. If you prefer it quieter, spend the pass on a Drink at ICEBAR Stockholm or a Traditional Swedish Fika at Systrarna Andersson.

What is not included

The best-known case is ABBA The Museum: it stands on Djurgården right among the attractions that are included, but it is in neither of the two versions. Public transport is not included either; there are details on the public transport page. And the Essentials Pass leaves out Gröna Lund Amusement Park, the three full-day excursions and Nationalmuseum. What it does cover is on the pass versions page.
